Start by exploring the ruins of Denbigh Castle and St Hilary’s Tower, which stands on its own a few metres away. Then walk down to Burgess Gate, which guides you into the centre of town.
Back Row is part of Denbigh’s medieval street pattern, and it’s lined with 15th century timbered buildings. It’s also home to the Glass Onion Café, which is known locally as the ‘hub’ of Denbigh. Here you can connect to the internet, view and buy local arts and crafts, and get tickets for events at Theatr Twm O’r Nant. Or just enjoy some excellent local food.
If you’re looking for gifts to take home, or a little treat for yourself, visit Baroque on Crown Square. They sell arts and crafts, clothes and accessories. Or pop into Just Right Collectables, which sells pottery, enamels and collectible figurines. Upstairs there’s a gallery of fine art. And a few doors away is The Secret Garden. It’s a garden shop, with a difference: it’s also an ice cream parlour.
The old County Hall was built in 1572, and restored in 1780. These days it’s the town’s library. But it’s also a museum. And an art gallery.
Walk up Bull Lane towards the castle. On the way you’ll pass Leicester’s Church. It was started in 1578, but it was never finished. Now it’s a ruin, but it’s well worth a visit.
Then climb to the top of the Countess Tower and walk along the town walls to the Goblin Tower. You can borrow the tower keys from the library. The views are incredible. And look out for ghosts… Goblin Tower, like the castle itself, is said to be haunted.
