Starting at Chester Castle, explore the medieval ruins and visit the Chester Military Museum, within the castle grounds. Then walk up to the Grosvenor Museum and find out about Chester’s Roman and medieval past and its natural history. You can even go on a guided tour of Chester with a Roman centurion.
The Roman amphitheatre was the largest in Britain, with seats for 7,000 people. You can find out all about it at Chester’s Visitor Centre4. You may even see an archaeologist cleaning up the latest finds.
The Eastgate Clock in the centre of Chester was built to commemorate Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee, and it’s a great place to get a view of the streets below. And if you walk under the clock, you’ll be on one of Chester’s busiest shopping streets.
Chester’s shops draw visitors from all over North Wales and Cheshire. High street giants rub shoulders with exclusive designers like Karen Millen. But there are plenty of quirky little shops too, and many of them are housed in Chester’s two-tiered medieval rows. Like The Japanese Shop, selling everything from chopsticks to kimonos. Or Nauticalia, where you can buy absolutely anything to do with sailing. Or Liberty Bell, with its American crafts and lessons in rag doll making.
Chester Cathedral is ancient. Admire the 14th century wood carvings and stained glass, then have a cup of tea in the 13th century refectory. And then explore Chester’s galleries and art shops. Like the Watergate Gallery. Or the Cartoon Gallery, where you can watch a cartoonist at work.
Finish your walk with a Thai meal at the Ruan Orchid on Lower Bridge Street. Their Gaeng Khiaw Wan is divine; it’s hot, but it won’t burn a hole in your pocket.
