Start at Caernarfon Castle and explore the battlements, and the regimental museum of the Royal Welch Fusiliers.
At Gray Thomas you can browse gifts and buy local works of art. Or create your own – they also sell a fine range of artists’ materials.
Go through the arch and walk along the town walls, enjoying the views of Anglesey as you go. Keep going until you reach Victoria Dock and the Caernarfon Maritime Museum, then pop into Galeri Caernarfon, where you can enjoy a coffee between exhibitions. Then have a stroll around the swish new Doc Fictoria development, with its blue flag marina, restaurants and huge Celtica gift shop.
The Black Boy Inn has stood on Northgate Street for nearly 500 years. Pop in for a pint and a spot of lunch, and soak up the cosy olde worlde atmosphere. Look out for the resident ghost of a nun.
At the old Market Hall you can browse old books and collectables. Or if you prefer your books brand new, pop in to Palas Print and say hello to Eirian. She reads a lot, so ask her for a recommendation. She also makes an excellent cup of coffee.
At Y Pantri Cymraeg you’ll get a real taste of Wales; they sell a wide range of Welsh food and drink, including local chutneys and beers. And for one of the best dinners in Caernarfon, visit Stones Bistro in the colourful Hole In The Wall Street. Their lamb shanks are legendary.
